Memorial of St Egwin
Remembering St Egwin on his feast day invites me to prefer the slow work of formation over immediate relief, to test my discomfort with prayer and counsel, and to trust that God can turn firmness into a cradle for holiness. In a world that prizes convenience, Egwin calls us back to commitment, accountability and the patient labour of souls. May his witness strengthen us.

Memorial of St Egwin of Evesham
St Egwin's life is an important one in the company of saints because it teaches me about fidelity under pressure. Born a noble and raised to the see of Worcester, Egwin insisted on clerical discipline and moral integrity in a time when such insistence provoked resistance. When his own clergy accused him of excessive severity, he did not retaliate or resign; he went to Rome to answer the charges and to place his ministry under the judgement of the wider Church. That pilgrimage was an act of humility and accountability, not escape.
On his return he founded Evesham Abbey, inspired by a vision of the Blessed Virgin, and invested his authority in a monastic foundation that would shape generations. For me the striking lesson is that firmness in leadership, when rooted in pastoral care, can be formative rather than merely punitive. Egwin's strictness protected the vulnerable, upheld sacramental order, and created a space where holiness could be cultivated.
His example challenges the easy option of flight when discipline feels uncomfortable. He shows that true pastoral courage sometimes means submitting to scrutiny, enduring misunderstanding, and then building institutions that outlast personal reputation.
